Recruitment Process

The Public Trustee maintains a recruitment pool for candidates interested in ASO3 Personal Estates and Estate Services Officer positions. This pool supports timely recruitment when vacancies arise. Positions may become available at different times throughout the year as staffing requirements change, with contract types including Ongoing, Term and Backfill vacancies, depending on operational needs.

Estate Services

The ASO3 Estate Services Officer is responsible for providing administrative services to clients for deceased estates and trusts. This role will involve liaising regularly with internal and external stakeholders for legal, taxation and real estate transactions. Furthermore, it will involve managing a high-volume case load whilst dealing with conflict situations and challenging customers in a timely manner.

Duties will include:

  • Consulting with and interviewing beneficiaries and clients whilst ensuring effective planning, organisation and administration of estates and trusts.
  • Preparing accurate financial statements whilst contributing to the smooth operation of the office.
  • Providing preparation of wills and power of attorney documents in accordance with relevant standards, procedures and legislation.
  • Coordinating the sale, transfer and purchase of assets, including insurance cover and property inspections, whilst adhering to relevant legislation.
  • Regularly reviewing trust investment portfolios and strategies whilst liaising with clients and arranging for the sale of small parcels investments.

Financial Administration:

The ASO3 Personal Estates Officer is responsible for providing financial administrative services to customers for protected, award and power of attorney estates and will involve providing excellent customer service in accordance with the service standards of Public Trustee.

Duties will include:

  • Ensuring the effective planning, organisation and administration of estates by liaising with customers, customer representatives, caregivers and agencies.
  • Identifying, recording and arranging for payment of customers’ payments, debts and accounts whilst ensuring the accuracy, integrity and reliability of financial records.
  • Preparing accurate financial statements for reporting to and attending the Guardianship Board and other Court hearings as required.
  • Where appropriate, distributing the funds held in trust of estates of deceased customers in accordance with the customer's will or relevant legislation.
  • Reviewing all estates on an annual basis by completing relevant documentation and complying with relevant Acts, Regulations and Public Trustee delegations, policies, standards and procedures.
  • Performing estate administration in a professional and efficient manner.

About the Business

The Office of the Public Trustee (Public Trustee) operates as part of the Attorney-General’s Department and was established on 1 January 1881, under the Public Trustee Act 1995 (SA). It offers services to South Australians, including will preparation, powers of attorney, and administration of deceased estates and trusts.  The Public Trustee is also responsible for managing the personal, legal, and financial affairs of individuals who are unable to handle these matters on their own. Special Conditions for Employment

Employment is dependent upon a National Police Certificate clearance that the AGD finds satisfactory. Successful applicants will be provided further information if an interview is requested. Forms are not to be lodged directly with SA Police (SAPOL) under any circumstances and any fees incurred by applicants in doing so will not be recoverable from the AGD.
