I have always been interested in the interconnectivity of countries and by the interaction between governments and businesses in the context of a globalised environment.
Government is an influencing and policy leadership institution and as such, plays an important role in the prosperity and functionality of society as a whole.
I studied Commerce (International Business) at the University of Adelaide, and was inspired to apply for the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) Graduate Program after attending a job expo, speaking with a current Graduate, and learning about the development and career opportunities within the SA Government.
Having a background in wine and commerce, I worked briefly in the Agriculture, Food and Wine Division of Primary Industries and Regions SA, before being offered a permanent position in DTF.
The great thing about government is that on a daily basis, the type of work is never the same. There are new challenges which arise, and varied tasks which have to be effectively managed.
Since starting in DTF, I have had the opportunity to work on major projects, attend functions and congresses, look after agency accounts, and deal with Commonwealth-State issues and relations.
My attraction to DTF stems from the experience and knowledge which comes from working in a key, central agency in government.
Getting the big, overarching picture when combining all of the moving parts of government provides me with a deep understanding of how the state operates and the amount of resources required to ensure the smooth running of such a vast jurisdiction.
I get up every morning with the intention and mindset to better the South Australian community. This happens through the work that I deliver in the office, and in my interaction with the public.
The public sector is great both in terms of personal development, through coaching and leadership opportunities, but also through flexible working arrangements and positive, inclusive, working environments.
There are many networking opportunities through collaboration across teams, branches and departments.
Despite what may be said in the media about the lack of job opportunities for young people in South Australia, this is not what I have experienced since my time at university.
If you are a motivated, passionate, adaptable and curious individual, then there are plenty of working opportunities for you in South Australia.
