After completing a Bachelor of Management (Marketing) at the University of South Australia, I was fortunate to gain work experience in the former Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Here, I worked on a customer research project from which I created a new product range using aerial photography. This led to a contract to further develop these products. The rest is history! I applied for a permanent position after a few contract extensions and became a fully-fledged South Australian government employee.
There is nothing average about my day! It is always full of challenges and new adventures. I usually work on new communication strategies and look at how to best use our current channels including the website, intranet and industry networks, and sometimes strike an opportunity to trial new methods of communicating including social media. It's all about providing consistent messages to our target audience, at the right time, and in the right media.
The sometimes chaotic nature of the work. I thrive in pressure scenarios and enjoy the goals and achieving the end outcomes. It is all worth it when you see a video get shared and receive thousands of likes, or hear positive comments about some of the communication strategies you have implemented.
To see how I can influence peoples' decisions or behaviours. I am an advocate of people making informed decisions. The only way people can do that is by knowing more about the things government is doing to help the general community. Engaging with the community and educating tax payers on how their money is being spent is important.
Diversity - I can work in many different departments and learn new things, while still applying my marketing and communication skills.
Flexibility with a work-life balance - sometimes work can be 24/7 however, you have flexi days and access to leave, which help in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
South Australia is home. It offers an amazing lifestyle and we are only 30 to 40 minutes away from everything. Who wouldn't work in a city like Adelaide!
I am definitely conscious of making a contribution - I too am a tax payer and want to ensure that our tax payers' dollars are being spent wisely. I want people to know how we are doing great things in government, and through my skills and work, I can do that.
