About the opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Managing Solicitor in the Professional Conduct Section of the Legal Services Branch of South Australia Police (SAPOL). 

The Managing Solicitor, Professional Conduct Section facilitates the provision of advice and representation on sensitive disciplinary and criminal matters involving SAPOL employees. 

The position manages a small team of experienced prosecutors to undertake the work of the Professional Conduct Section, including adjudicating and prosecuting disciplinary and criminal processes involving SAPOL employees, and providing advice on related policy and ethical issues. Professional Conduct Section represent the Commissioner of Police in the Police Disciplinary Tribunal and in minor criminal prosecutions.

This position supports and assists the Director, Legal Services Branch with legal research, advice, representation and other tasks as directed.

The Legal Services Branch is part of the Governance and Capability Service, and  provides legal and policy advice to the Commissioner, Executive Leadership Team, and SAPOL employees generally.  Professional Conduct Section is part of Legal Services Branch and is responsible for effectively managing criminal and disciplinary processes involving SAPOL employees.

Special Conditions

  • The incumbent must hold a current Australian work eligibility status and will be subject to a criminal history check.
  • The incumbent may be assigned to other duties at this remuneration level or equivalent.
  • Some out of hours work and intra/interstate travel may be required.
  • The incumbent is required to participate in SAPOL’s iEngage program.

Requirements

  • A degree in law and admitted, or eligible for admission, as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia
  • An unrestricted Practicing Certificate.
  • Significant experience as a legal practitioner including demonstrated experience identifying and advising on complex legal issues.
  • Experience conducting criminal or disciplinary matters, including appearing as counsel.
  • Demonstrated experience in management and supervision of legal staff.
  • Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to produce work of a high standard in an environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse complex issues, to think clearly and logically, to develop logical and practical outcomes and to explain conclusions.
  • High level interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated high level of personal integrity and experience handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of the principles of Equity and Diversity requirements.

Salary

LE5 - $157,720 - $171,999 per annum.
