About the role:
Reporting to the Division Medicine, Cardiac & Critical Care Director, this role is responsible for providing advanced echocardiographic assessment and cardiovascular monitoring of critically ill patients within the intensive care unit setting.
Duties for the role will include:
- Quality transthoracic and transoesophageal image acquisition
- Communicating relevant findings promptly with treating team
- Providing care and assuming responsibility for patients in the Critical Care Unit, under supervision of the Consultant.
- Conducting inpatient/or procedural consultations of patients including assessing, analysing, diagnosing, managing, treating, educating and supporting patients presenting to them. Ensure optimum outcomes by providing opinions in respect of diagnosis, attributability and assessment of inpatients and referrals as appropriate.
- Coordinate structured echocardiography education program involving weekly case review, lectures and “hands-on” bedside teaching, under the supervision of echo-trained Consultants.
- Participate in teaching of medical student at graduate and postgraduate levels. Assist in the development, administration and organisation of programs for teaching in these areas as directed by Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services.
- Participate in and progress echocardiography related research activities Assisting with research activities as specified by the Unit Head or Director, Division of Medicine, Cardiac and Critical Care Services by conducting research and collaborating with other units within the hospital and other Critical Care units.
- Contributing to the development of an integrated team approach and culture which is highly responsive to the needs of our consumers.
About you:
- Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent
- Registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner
- Completion of CICM focused cardiac ultrasound in intensive care training requirements or equivalent.
- Transthoracic echocardiography image acquisition skills
- Effective communication skills both written and oral.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary setting.
- Proven level of skills to enable work in Critical Care.
- Experience as a Team Leader in MET [Medical Emergency Team]
- Minimum 48 months ICCU experience and/or Anaesthesia experience with airway competence

As per the SMOEA 2022, the total term of employment with SA Health will be 3 years. Rotations following the initial 12-month allocation as Advanced Trainee will be determined in line with your training and SA Health’s requirements. This may include transfer to other SA Health locations to perform work appropriate to classification, skills, and capabilities.
