The Department for Infrastructure and Transport plays a vital role connecting people and places in South Australia by managing roads, marine and public transport networks across the State, and builds and maintains the State-owned infrastructure that enables the delivery of essential and important government services to our community.

The Opportunity 
The Asbestos Officer provides specialist advice and support for the safe management of asbestos across South Australian Government buildings and assets. Reporting to the Team Lead, Asbestos Advisor, the role delivers asbestos advice, competency testing and project management, including asbestos registers, inspections and incident response. The role also supports asbestos removal activities, policy and standards development, administration of the Treasury Asbestos Removal Fund, and auditing of hazardous materials management systems.

About you 
You work effectively under limited direction, applying strong technical, quality and risk management knowledge to resolve complex issues and deliver clear, well-reasoned advice.

You bring extensive knowledge and practice experience in the application of the Code of Practice for the Management and Safe Removal of Asbestos, to safely identify and manage asbestos as required by the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (WHS Regulations).

Your experience reflects your training and competency in identifying asbestos, handling and taking asbestos samples; to identify suspected asbestos and determine risk and controls measures. You are familiar with building and construction practices to determine where asbestos is likely to be present and able to determine that material may be friable or non-friable asbestos and evaluate its condition.

You collaborate with stakeholders to implement solutions and bring sound knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and quality management frameworks within a technical or operational environment.

Educational Qualifications /Licences 

  • Trade qualifications or equivalent experience in Asbestos Management is required.
  • Must meet the requirements of a competent person as defined in the Code of Practice for the Management and Safe Removal of Asbestos, with the capability to safely identify and manage asbestos. Under the Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012 (WHS Regulations), a competent person is someone who has acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the task through relevant training, qualifications or experience.
  • A current driver’s licence is essential.

Special Conditions

  • A National Police Check (NPC) is required prior to employment in the Department for Infrastructure and Transport which must be renewed every three years.
  • Some infrequent work in confined locations and hazardous situations where protective clothing and breathing apparatus may be required.
  • Some out of hours and Weekend work (Saturday) will be required; and, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.

Tenure of Vacancy
Temporary appointment up to (2) years.

Remuneration
ASO5 - $89,007 to $98,991 pa + superannuation
