The Department for Infrastructure and Transport plays a vital role connecting people and places in South Australia by managing roads, marine and public transport networks across the State, and builds and maintains the State-owned infrastructure that enables the delivery of essential and important government services to our community.

The Opportunity   

The Marine Safety Officer supports state-wide water and land patrols to ensure compliance with boating legislation and Codes of Practice. The role focuses on vessel safety through education, enforcement, deterrence, and investigation of incidents and breaches. It contributes to strategic initiatives that promote safe recreational and commercial use of South Australian waters, requiring strong legislative interpretation and investigative capability

About you  

You are a confident communicator who builds strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to resolve operational issues and deliver complex programs. Able to work independently or collaboratively, you prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, and make sound decisions under limited direction. You apply strong technical and operational expertise, with a clear understanding of legislation, quality standards, and risk management requirements.

Educational Qualifications/Licenses 

  • Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency. (willing to gain this qualification for OPS03 role).
  • A current driver licences is essential.
  • Current First Aid Certificate, Forklift Licence and Heavy Vehicle Licence will be well regarded. 

Special Conditions 

  • A National Police Check (NPC) which is required to employment with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport and is required to be renewed every three years.
  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC) is required prior to employment which must be renewed every five years before expiry.
  • Normal hours of duty will be 150 hours to be worked over a four (4) week period including a minimum of 26 weekends (26 Saturdays and 26 Sundays) and six (6) public holidays per year for which a penalty rate will apply.
  • Must wear Agency uniform as required.
  • Must be suitable to be appointed as an Authorised Officer under relevant State and Commonwealth Acts.
  • In the event of an emergency any staff member of Marine Services may be required to assist in response and recovery activities. This may potentially include long hours and challenging work conditions.
  • Roles may be required to work at various locations within the State.
  • Some out of hours and weekend work, along with some intra/interstate travel requiring overnight stays, may be required.

Tenure of Vacancy

Temporary appointment up to one (1) year.

Remuneration

OPS3 - $71,589 to $76,033 pa + superannuation.

OPS4 - $79,432 to $83,266 pa + superannuation
