About the Role

The Assistant Payroll Officer supports the accurate and timely processing of payroll in compliance with Australian workplace legislation, including the Fair Work Act, Australian Tax Office requirements and superannuation obligations.

This role assists in maintaining payroll records, ensuring employee data is accurate and up to date, and supporting the correct calculation of employee entitlements and statutory obligations such as PAYG withholding and superannuation contributions. The Assistant Payroll Officer provides payroll administration support, responds to employee payroll enquiries, and contributes to the efficient operation of payroll and finance functions.

The role also supports payroll reporting, record management, system maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure payroll processes remain accurate, compliant, and effective.

Available in a part time (0.6 FTE) capacity for a 1-year contract. The successful candidate will be required to work Tuesdays to Thursday.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and processing of payroll across fortnightly pay cycles.
  • Maintain accurate employee payroll records and update payroll information as required.
  • Support compliance with relevant awards, enterprise agreements, policies, and legislative requirements.
  • Assist in the calculation and processing of employee entitlements, including leave, superannuation, and taxation obligations.
  • Respond to payroll-related enquiries from employees and escalate complex issues where required.
  • Assist with payroll reconciliations and the preparation of payroll reports for finance and management.
  • Support payroll system maintenance, testing, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with payroll audits and ensure accurate record-keeping and documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Payroll Officer, Finance team, and other stakeholders to ensure payroll accuracy and efficiency.
  • Provide administrative support for payroll-related projects and compliance activities as required.

 Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in an assistant payroll position with strong computer skills
  • Sound knowledge of payroll legislation and compliance requirements (SA Government an advantage)
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with MicrOpay (payroll system)
  • Ability to manage confidential information with integrity
