The organisation

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) plays a crucial role in providing the people of South Australia with an independent and effective criminal prosecution service which is timely, efficient and just. The Office of some 220 staff comprises the Director of Public Prosecutions (Director), Deputy Director, prosecutors, solicitors, witness assistance officers and administrative staff.

A vibrant, busy workplace, the ODPP handles all major indictable criminal prosecutions, working effectively with SA Police.

The role

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced leader to leave their mark on an important public sector institution and drive meaningful change to meet emerging challenges, deliver improved outcomes and strengthen the ODPP’s capacity to serve the community with integrity and excellence.

The Director’s responsibilities encompass the conduct of the most serious criminal trials and appeals.

This important role works closely with the Attorney-General and Chief Executive, Attorney-General’s Department (AGD).

The Director will:

  • Conduct Appeals in the Court of Appeal and the High Court of Australia
  • Provide direction and leadership of staff and ensure the proper allocation of resources
  • Provide detailed legal/policy advice on criminal law, its application and the application of prosecution policy
  • Enhance the ODPP’s relationship with the Courts, SAPOL and other key stakeholders

What we are looking for

A Senior or King’s Counsel, senior criminal lawyer or member of the magistracy or judiciary with extensive experience and expertise in criminal law and advocacy will relish the outstanding quality work on offer in this role. In addition to exceptional legal skills, a keen interest in leading other lawyers and making a contribution beyond pure court work is essential.

You also have an impeccable reputation for ethics and the desire to add value within a key public institution.

The position is open to legal practitioners of at least 7 years’ standing.

Reward

Terms and conditions are determined by the Governor. A maximum salary and allowances commensurate with a Puisne judge of the Supreme Court will apply.
