The Department for Correctional Services have excellent career opportunities as Correctional Industry Officer roles in the industries workshops across all our prisons and are operated like any business and provide prisoners with a structured day, vocational training and a working environment that reflects community life and promotes a strong work ethic.

There are Engineering, Woodwork, Metal, Spray Painting, and Signage workshops that produce a diverse range of high-quality products and services, including:

  • Structural steel and general metal fabrication
  • Custom-built skip bins, cages, and industrial equipment
  • Surface preparation and industrial spray painting and finishing
  • Timber products and outdoor infrastructure (e.g. benches, picnic tables)
  • Furniture design and production
  • Cabinetry and joinery
  • Signage design, production, and installation
  • Refurbishment and repair of commercial and industrial items
  • Custom manufacturing to client specifications

The Department partners with local South Australian businesses to seek products and services from our prison industries in supporting the employment and rehabilitation of prisoners.

This type of work is enormously rewarding and important to the rehabilitation of prisoners through teaching them skills and experience in welding, joinery, woodwork and may gain qualifications such as a Certificate ll in Engineering, Certificate ll in Civil Construction and prepares them for working-life upon their release.

What we offer

  • $74k + Correctional Industry and Vocational Training Allowance (Base salary + CIVT allowance (after the first 12 months) plus superannuation).
  • Four weeks annual leave.
  • Ongoing employment in the SA Public Sector – Full time & Part time positions available.
  • No prior correctional experience required.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to complete a 12-week, full-time induction and training program upon receiving a job offer and during the program successful completion of training will be accredited with Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Adult Custodial).

Minimum Requirements and special conditions

  • A current South Australia Driver’s Licence
  • An Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • 18 years or older
  • The incumbent is required to satisfactorily complete a National Criminal History Check.
  • Hours of duty are an average of 38 hours over a 5-day roster; however roster times may be varied.
  • A flexible approach to working hours is required.

Salary
Correctional Industries Officer: $72,413 p.a. - $78,445 p.a. (CO3) plus CIVT allowance increasing up to $78,508 – 87,445 p.a. plus superannuation.
