How did you get to where you are today?

After completing my Bachelor of Social Work in 2006, I gained a position in a non-government organisation working on programs that focussed on mental health and homelessness. After this I was employed in my first public sector job as a social worker in Families SA (now Department for Child Protection).

I then moved to the Department for Education as a Student Attendance Counsellor where I really enjoyed the project management and policy development aspects of the role, so I jumped at the chance to apply for the Program Coordinator- Beyond Auto position to further develop that skill base whilst maintaining direct client work.

What does an average day look like?

Each day is varied.

I might start the day at the southern office, for appointments with clients, linking them to necessary services. Whilst on site I complete case notes and case records and then I might work on a report that is due soon.

I am then offsite to chair a meeting on social inclusion, working with local government. Along the way I reply to emails and phone calls about any projects I have on the go.

I try to bring stability to the role with set days on site at various locations however the role requires me to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the individuals, the community and the program.

What do you love about your job?

I was initially drawn to the role by my passion for working in northern Adelaide (originally where the role was focused).

The role has enabled me to maintain direct client work whilst allowing me to further develop my interest and skills in project management. I love that I have a number of ‘teams’ that I am a part of and that my role is flexible and varied.

Why do you do what you do?

I originally got into social work as I wanted to do a job that I felt mattered and contributed to society. Over the years, I have become increasingly passionate about early intervention and prevention and this role allows me to make a difference in that area. It has also challenged me to work in new areas.

What do you see are some of the benefits of working in the public sector?

The public sector provides opportunities for career progression, to gain skills and experience in new areas, and experience new challenges. This, along with great working conditions, has meant that I haven’t looked back since entering the public sector workforce.

Why have you chosen to work in South Australia?

Adelaide is where my home is, and where my family are. Living and working in Adelaide provides a great lifestyle for my whole family. I feel this state offers affordability that others do not and provides with the opportunity to give back to the community where I was raised.
