Garnett

Correctional Officer, Port Augusta

Department for Correctional Services

How did you get to where you are today?

I saw a local advertisement for Correctional Officers and I thought it would be something different. I was working away from home a lot before that and I preferred to be home. It took me a while before I was willing to give it a go, but I haven’t looked back.

What does an average day look like?

An average day for me includes observing prisoners, facilitating prisoner movements and assisting prisoners with their daily routine. I communicate with prisoners frequently and work in a team with other officers.

What do you love about your job?

I love the comradery of working with other officers. I’ve made some good friends here. I really have a sense of satisfaction when I solve problems. I also love being able to build rapport with prisoners and to positively influence them.

Why do you do what you do?

I am serving my local community and keeping it safe.

What do you see are some of the benefits of working in the public sector?

The six weeks’ annual leave and seven day a week roster means I have flexibility when taking time off.

There is also a lot of opportunity within the prison and additional training is offered.

Why have you chosen to work in South Australia?

I was born and bred in Port Augusta and love contributing to the local community.
